Years ago when I was in Indonesia exploring ancient temples and pilgrimage sites, there was not a shortage of people pointing and giggling at me. And almost every time I smiled back at them, they would walk up to me, tell me I look goofy, and ask if they could take a picture with me. I'm sure they were laughing for years to come.
“Hey, remember that goofy-looking guy at the temple?”
And it wasn't just the kids; the adults were in on it too. I was cruising around on Mount Merapi, which was just up the way from the place I was staying, and ran into this fine group of folks from Sumatra. They were pretty much doing the same thing I was doing: exploring the temples on Java (Borobodur, Prambanan, Candi Sukuh, and a great many lesser-known ones) and heading off for hikes and photos.
