The Naxi people of Yunnan, China, have the only hieroglyphic language that is still being used today. If you want to learn their language, they've made it simple. You can buy a deck of cards that gives you the Naxi character, the Chinese translation, and the English.
Just north of Lijiang, I wandered through the Naxi community where they retain a strong connection to their past, as they were situated along the Southwest Silk Road which ran from India to Myanmar to Dali to Lijiang to Chendu. And it was part of the old Tea Horse Road.
