Monte Sanford has been working on behalf of the Goshute and Western Shoshone tribes to protect Bahsahwahbee. While he has worked for the Tribes protect this nationally significant and globally unique holy site from recent attempts to drain and destroy it, Dr. Sanford is also working with a dedicated team to protect this indigenous ceremonial site as a National Monument. A brief write-up of this effort was featured in National Geographic Travel.
While it's great to see some national coverage on our efforts to protect indigenous ceremonial sites, there is a much deeper story here. It is one that goes to the heart of why this holy land is so important to the indigenous people. It is also one that explains why this site is nationally significant, especially in terms of the events that outstandingly represent the dark side of the American Dream.
